Welcome to Summer Term in Year 3!
Year 3 are spending the Summer Term learning about the whole school topic of The World Around Us with a focus on fashion and clothing.
In English, we will be reading and retelling a variety of traditional tales like The 3 Billy Goats Gruff and The Emperor’s New clothes. We will write our own tales using traditional tale vocabulary and create and perform our own play scripts based on the stories we have read. In Guided Reading we will be exploring Firebird, a Russian traditional tale about a magical phoenix and a mysterious wolf.
In Maths, we will be working hard at finding fractions of numbers and quantities, ordering and comparing fractions, recognising equivalent fractions and adding and subtracting fractions with the same denominator. We will be revisiting measures including mass, capacity and length. The children are challenged regularly to apply their skills to problem solving and puzzles.
In History and Geography, we will be learning about traditional clothing from different countries around the world and exploring how fashion has changed over time. The children will look at how clothing is suited to different purposes around the world and will test textiles for their suitability.
In Science, our topic is the animals including humans, where we will be focussing on the body. The children will sort animals based on their type of skeleton, name and explain the purpose of the bones in the human body and investigate muscles and movement. Our understanding of how the human body is formed and how it functions will help us with our clothing designs for the Enterprise Academy fashion show and deepen our understanding when drawing bodies in the style of different artists, in art.
In PE, we will be focusing on striking and fielding sports such as rounders and cricket. We will be concentrating on developing accuracy when throwing and catching as well as learning effectively to stop and retrieve a ball and bat with power and precision. The children will begin by improving key batting and fielding techniques before applying their skills in games and matches.
