Year 3

Welcome to Spring Term in Year 3!

Year 3 are spending the spring term learning about our Extreme Earth, linking to the whole school topic of The Environment.

In English we will be reading The Pebble in My Pocket by Meredith Hooper and Chris Coady, which blends fiction and non-fiction writing and bold images to tell the story of a pebble’s journey from a mountain top to a country field, over 480 million years.  We will also be using images and news reports about the 2012 Nepal earthquake as stimuli for our own news reports, recording the effects of natural disasters.

In Maths we will be working hard on mastering our 3, 4 and 8 times tables and applying our skills to help multiply and divide larger numbers.  The children are challenged regularly to apply their knowledge and skills to problem solving and puzzles.

In Science we will be grouping and investigating rocks, testing soil permeability and examining fossils and the processes that form them.

In Geography we will be exploring natural disasters such as volcanoes, earthquakes and tsunamis, focussing on the processes that cause them and the effects they can have on the people who experience them.

Our History focus will be on famous Palaeontologist, Mary Anning, who discovered prehistoric Ichthyosaur fossils.

In PE we will continue to develop our improvisation, choreography and performances skills by creating dance routines inspired by the various effects of natural disasters.  The children will also develop their understanding and skills at invasion and ball games this half term.
